Can Clothing Boost Confidence?

Can Clothing Boost Confidence?

What’s the secret to being confident? Some people believe it's having a positive mental attitude, while others claim it's being wealthy. But according to one researcher, the answer may in fact lie in what we’re wearing. Professor Karen Pine from the University of Hertfordshire said that specific clothing - including even superhero T-shirts - can make people more confident in all sorts of situations.

Clothing is a main part of you. The way you dress sums the person you are. Your style and the clothes you choose reflect and affect your mood, health, and overall confidence. That’s exactly why you need to look the best you’ve ever looked day after day to make your day bright.

Lisa Stariha, "The Body Empowerment Coach", tries to instill in her clients that it is so important to “Get up, get dressed, and never give up each day.” Stariha, who often works from her home office, knows how comfortable it can be to work in yoga pants and a t shirt. But, she says, “to feel more beautiful, confident, and strong, you must change out of the yoga pants and put on clothes that give you power,”

You are what you dress

Clinical psychologist Dr Jennifer Baumgartner literally wrote the book on this phenomenon, which she calls the "psychology of dress." In "You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal About You," she explains not only how psychology determines our clothing choices, but how to overcome key psychological issues your wardrobe might be bringing to light in your everyday life, or even at work.

Quotes relating to clothing & confidence:

“I like my money right where I can see it…hanging in my closet.”
—Carrie Bradshaw

"Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live."
— Gianni Versace

“You can never take too much care over the choice of your shoes. Too many women think that they are unimportant, but the real proof of an elegant woman is what is on her feet.”
—Christian Dior

Confidence is a main part of life. You need to be confident that you did well in a test, be confident that you got your dream job from an important interview or, as the man above, be confident you will win the biggest boxing game of your life against a boxing 49-0 legend. McGregor needed to believe he would win and so dressed the part. He wore suit after suit for every meeting, every press conference to make himself feel like he was the best. Like he was unstoppable.

Conor McGregor never wears the same suit twice for quite a strange reason. The Notorious wears his suits very tight and has each of them tailor made. His tailor David Heil of David August clothing told TMZ:

"Every outfit I make for him takes 60 hours. “He likes to wear his suits high and tight and really tailored, and his size changes all the time depending on his fights. So we’re always measuring him to make sure it fits exactly how he wants it. "He’s such a style guy ... he’s always been that way since the day I met him”.

  • Another fantastic post! I 100% agree clothing can boost confidence but only if, you are truly comfortable in the items you will carry on your body. McGregor may be happy in a tight suit but for many this may act in contrast, making one feel discomfort, embarrassed and low. The key to boosting confidence with your clothing is to ensure you are truly happy. This alone will reflect tenfold.
